This Book Belongs to...

Over on the Daring Cardmakers blog today our new challenge has been set by Leo and has a rather literary flair!

She's challenged us to create a card inspired by our favourite reads... and well, mine is more inspired by a favourite adaptation of a Jane Austen Classic:

The BBC's Emma adaptation...

And perhaps this adaptation of Persuasion also pricked my imagination too.

Anyway, a love of regency-set romance very much dominates my Goodreads list!

And this is my interpretation:

I just love this background paper from Maggie Holmes' new Gather collection. It reminds me of the inside covers of old hardback novels. Plus the roses were very BBC-Emma-centric! And not much else was needed, I used my Simply Jane stamp and die set from PTI for the regency decorations, and the font from Waltzing Mouse's sentiment stamp is perfect for the period. :)

So this happened!!!

What an amazing surprise it was to get a shout out for not just one card, but two on the Lil' Inker Designs blog for You Made It Monday #3!

I was totally amazed and pretty over the moon. :D

Anyone who visits my blog or sees my cards floating about on Instagram and Flickr will know that I use that tree die from the Holly Jolly die set a lot. Like A LOT!

Especially because you can do some pretty cool things with it and it always looks fresh.

I love it so! And I have some other "unsung" heroes in my Lil' Inker die collection that get used a lot especially on holiday cards:

I especially cannot do without the instant camera die and stitched circles and rectangles - I use them on almost every other card I make.

The other card that got featured was one where I used that fab Jolly word die on a card I made in July last year - it must have been one gloomy summer as the photo for it came out so dark. LOL

But here is the glittery Jolly die in all its glory complete with some holly from the Holly Jolly dies:

So all in all, a very happy Monday night.

Hey Little Magpie December projects

I wanted to share the last of my 2014 makes on the blog before Big Ben chimes midnight tonight!

Full details of my "Thank you" card gift set can be found here on the Hey Little Magpie blog. :)

Here's what was inside that box!

Cards featuring the lovely Dear Lizzy Serendipity papers plus some ideas for the matching stamp set.

And here are the cards inside the box:

I totally loved this "Liz Lemon" paper in the line. The navy/white stripe is the reverse and I really liked the combination of navy and lemon yellow tones. So fresh and happy!

Next up, I used the jar stamp from the accompanying stamp set and filled it with lots of fluttery hearts:

More yellow tones on this card - but mixed in with a rainbow of hearts flying out the jar. Just scoring your heart die-cuts before gluing them down makes such a difference. Totally lifts them from the card. :)

And another outing for the jar stamp, this time keeping things more simple by creating layers through stamping:

To create the jar I first stamped the greeting on a strip of paper, the scallop border is actually a stamp in the Serendipity stamp set stamped in pink ink. I then glued the strip onto the aqua paper and stamped the jar image and fussy cut the jar out. Simple!

Next up some more sunshine yellow:

There were a couple of behind-the-scenes accidents with this card which ended up why the sentiment is on that blue strip of paper, but in fact it was like the name of this line suggests, a happy accident!

And to end, there's a bright and bold number!

I loved the raspberry, leaf and teal tones on this floral paper, so much so I paired them up with a little glitter in the bow and I die-cut the sentiment 4 times from raspberry pink cardstock to create a chunky solid greeting that really pops. I love this technique for solid word dies, so effective! :D

52 Cards challenge - Week 52

Good morning!

Well, there's good news... this post is being drafted from my new computer set-up. Still got a way to go to be up and running as normal, but the main stuff has been transferred over and things are looking a lot better!

But I have no new projects to share this week for our final prompt of 2014.

So as in previous years I thought it'd be nice to share my favourite cards from 2014 - a regular one and a Christmas cracker. If you happen to have time to make cards this week then of course you can use these cards as inspiration like a sketch, colours, elements, etc.

First this one:

I just really liked how all the clean and simple elements came together. Plus I was on a real coral stripe kick this summer. :D

And as for a festive make, then this one came up high in my list of favourites - funnily enough I just realised both cards were from the same 52 cards prompt back in June... I must have really liked that prompt!

I even used the same banner die and stamp combo! lol Well this card features that fab Lil' Inker Designs tree die showing off the 3D tree technique that you can do with it. :D I also really love how delicate the vellum snowflake looks. Very festive and wintry!

Well it just remains for me to say thank you to everyone who has played along with the 52 Cards challenge this year! Sadly I won't have time to continue it next year, but I will be hosting a new monthly challenge in the card forum on UK Scrappers that will be similar in nature. I hope you check it out! :D

Inspired by you...

For our final dare of 2014, Leo has challenged us to create a card inspired by our own crafty repertoire. :D

One of my favourite cards of late was this snowglobe card I made using Elle's Studio Good Cheer papers and those fab Neat & Tangled Winter Wishes stamps.

Sadly no longer have much left of these papers, but I had a ready-made snowglobe waiting to be used... :D

This week's prompt is a colour inspiration one using this rather festive image. :D

Sadly December photography issues kicked in majorly this weekend, but the colours are a lot more vibrant in real life. I mounted silver glitter paper behind the die-cut greeting so it's really glitzy. Plus there's the red glitter star for extra pop. :D

Shake it out and shake it up...

This week on the Daring Cardmakers blog, Sharon has challenged us to hop on the shaker card bandwagon which has recently been brought back to life!

I remember back in 2003 or so making one of my first shaker cards with beads and Doodlebug buttons - back then we didn't have the fab and versatile dies that we can now use to create really unique apertures for the shaker windows...

But despite all that, I have gone for a pretty simple shaker card look with the humble circle!

I didn't have any acetate to hand, so salvaged some clear packaging from a set of embellishments to do the job. And the perfect stamps for my little winter wonderland window? The Winter Wishes stamps by Neat & Tangled, I love the font they've used for the greetings too! I want more Christmas wishes in this font! :D

And at long last, for the shaker element.... I opened the pack of Mica flakes by Melissa Frances that I bought a couple of years ago in Florida, and finally used a sprinkling! You can't quite see the twinkliness here, but it's very frosty in real life. :)

Definitely go check out the fab shaker cards by the design team! There are some real beauties!

I'm back with my second festive number of the week for the sketch prompt I shared here.

I stuck closer to the sketch with this one. It's hard to see but the second snowflake cut from vellum is also a stitched one. I lifted the ends of all the snowflake bits to give the card more dimension and there wasn't much left to do but add a greeting. :)

Really nice to use some of my older Christmas stash with newer stamp and die purchases from this year. :)

Colours of December

It's the first Friday of the month, so it's time for a new colour challenge over on the Daring Cardmakers blog - and this month's pick comes from the lovely Dawn. :)

It's a red and blue affair, and your shade of blue can be anywhere on the scale.

Naturally I immediately veered in the direction of aqua!

I love any excuse to team red with aqua, so you know where my mind was heading as soon as I saw this pic!

And I can do a festive number because at our last crop I cut out three little green trees intending to use them on a card then and there, but nope... they didn't get used.

52 Cards challenge 2014 - Week 49

Welcome to our first prompt of December!

It's going to be a crazy month for all you crafty folks out there, so to make life easier I thought it would be good to focus on the things that are...

On your to-do list!

If there are special card projects that you need to get done and dusted, now's your chance!

Mine was at the top of my to-do list. A special card request for a friend that involved searching through older stash to find the right papers for the job. ;o) They're usually always there to be found somewhere in the shelving system!

Squirrels were a special request. :D

I found the perfect match for those squirrels in the form of the Little Sprout collection pack by Crate - it's a really old collection, but the papers and designs haven't aged, I love the muted woodland colours and organic patterns. Plus there were cute little glittered toadstools and acorns. What's not to love if you're a squirrel? I needed to have the little birthday squirrel sat somewhere higher up so that the whole "you're all... we're all" text would fit properly: enter that handy branch die!

Here's hoping the birthday boy likes it. :D

52 Christmas Crackers 2014 - Week 48

Evening!

It's back to the land of snowflakes for my next card for this week's prompt. :)

I really liked the idea of layering snowflakes a bit like the way the icing decorates the cookies with a contrasting design.

Definitely an excuse to get out my Avery Elle Noel snowflake dies. :D

The bokeh panel is cut with one of the stitched rectangle dies from my new mat die set from Lil' Inker Designs. I then cut out the larger snowflake in the middle and mounted the panel on some snowflake paper with 3D foam. The smaller snowflake is cut from white cardstock and also on 3D foam. I curled up the ends a little to give it extra lift and added an enamel dot in the middle. :)

The merry die is cut from a raspberry pink cardstock and I finally used up a label tag that I'd stamped back in October that just didn't work for that project. Perfect here. :D

52 Cards challenge 2014 - Week 48

Morning everyone!

It's a photo prompt challenge this week to get our creative minds going.

I saw this pic on Pinterest and thought it would make a great jumping off point for winter/Christmas crafting:

So... initial ideas when I saw this pic:

• Snowflakes and other pointy shapes like stars
• Use vellum or glassine envelopes and pockets
• Silver / gold / white / kraft as a colour to focus on
• Gingerbread/baking theme
• Frosty elements - like chunky glitter, Mica flakes, Stickles
• Pearls and enamel dots
• Thread / sewing / stitching

You don't need to replicate the colours or look of the photo, just take elements and incorporate them into your card. :)

I had a couple of "new" items I wanted to play with that fit the bill!

I concentrated on the stitching element, snowflakes, silver, gold, white and glitter! Apologies for the naff photos, but the light was terrible yesterday for taking photos. It's hard to see in the photos but the snowflake is actually stitched, as is the circle (courtesy of my new Lil' Inker Stitched mats dies), and the top and bottom edge are stitched thanks to borrowing some fab Paper Smooches dies my crafty partner in crime Claire. :D They might be going on my wishlist, buuuut I think I'll need the magnetic Big Shot mat first!

I definitely needed to make a festive "tree scene" for that chipboard bauble - so the perfect solution was to use the pine tree branch die to do it and of course the Lil' Inker Designs photo frame die. :)

I love the polka paper against the dark text paper - that little tree was the perfect match for the greeting banner. :)

I then wanted to share some ideas for using the circular card element greetings:

I used a nesties die that was the perfect fit for the WPlus9 spring wreath die to create a festive frame around the greeting. Also for a bit of pop in the bottom right corner, I layered up some of the embellishments from various accessory packs.

Next up, a cool way to use the circular greetings on rosettes, like snowflake rosettes:

I love how the snowflake pops against that black and white chevron paper. :)

You get a pretty good idea of the shapes in the card layers pack here as I think I used almost every one of them on this card! :)

I really enjoyed working with this collection and will definitely be using the card layer elements to make some Christmas tags too. :D

Something old, something new...

It's time for a classic mash-up dare on the Daring Cardmakers blog - it's the kind of challenge I always love!

Combing new stash and old stash - thank Lythan for this challenge!

It was the perfect nudge to try out my shiny new Lil' Inker stamps and dies for a fun card for a special birthday boy.

I had an idea in my head - needless to say, that idea was very different to what turned out... BUT it did involve the boy collection pack of My Mind's Eye Alphabet Soup (I loved the Alphabet Soup releases) and the I'm All, You're All stamps and coordinating dies... so that was good.

Here's the final creation:

I used a very old giraffe stamp by Sassafras Lass from the Jungle Pals collection and I found the perfect stamps for the "Wooo hooo!!" bit - the birdies by Lawn Fawn! I'm pretty chuffed with the end result and that I actually managed to squeeze all the elements on that card! It was touch and go and one point. LOL

52 Christmas Crackers 2014 - Week 47

Evening all!

I'm combining this week's 52 cards inspiration prompt:

With the fab colour challenge over on the Make the Day Special blog:

...to bring you another festive card with my lovely new Neat and Tangled Winter Wishes stamps from Make the Day Special. Loooove them!

So I went with an idea I had as soon as I saw this stamp set, I thought it would be perfect for making a snow globe scene - and yet again I love these stamps combined with papers from the Good Cheer collection by Elle's Studio which is available from Hey Little Magpie. :)

I stuck a strip of white glitter paper on the snowflake paper, then stamped the main stamp in Versafine before cutting it out with a circle die. The little wooden base is is actually paper cut with the MFT file tab die. I stamped the greeting with red dye ink and finished off with those fab green MME Jubilee enamel dots plus Rock Candy Distress Stickles around the snow globe and Frosted Lace Stickles along the ground - most festive!

I will definitely be using this fab stamp set again soon!

It's time for another colour prompt and I have a rather festive pic to get your creative gears turning:

So we have those festive favourites of red, green, white, gold, plus aqua, kraft, and pink thrown into the mix! Choose any combination or shade of the colours you see in the image and get crafting! :D

I am totally in love with this set! :D I want more festive greetings in that font! I stamped out the main image in Hero Arts Charcoal Grey onto that bokeh background paper, then added little hearts in Pale Tomato. The Merry Christmas die and stamp are by Wplus9 and a perfect match for the winter wishes. I added some Frosted Lace Stickles just below the houses and trees for a little winter sparkle and for an extra pop of green used enamel dots from MME's Jubilee line - and yep, the Lawn Fawn journaling card die came out to play yet again! :D

Light a candle

...especially if it's a nice Christmas Yankee Candle. :D I have only purchased the one votive so far this year - Candy Cane Lane.

But I digress! This week over on the Daring Cardmakers blog it's Kathy's turn to choose our challenge, and she has dared us to feature candles on our cards. :)

I immediately knew the direction my card was going!

I've had the Merry & Bright stamp set from WPlus9 in my collection a while now, but I've not yet stamped out every image in this set - in particular the hurricane lantern and candle combo.

And with the aid of a few Distress Inks and Hero Arts cubes (I wish Hero Arts ink didn't stain as much as it does but hey.... Pale Tomato makes for a nice poinsettia) here's what I created:

I love the colours of these Fancy Pants Christmas papers - the knitted motif is really fab, and they do such a good job of showcasing the colours I picked out for the candle arrangement. :) I do love a bit of 2-step stamping, which is why the images in this set are so defined, like the sprigs of spruce, holly and the poinsettias themselves. Will definitely have to use this set more - I just need time to sit down and stamp everything before going ahead and using all the elements. :)

Better late than never!

I managed to finally get an OK photo of my card for this week's sketch prompt.

I must make a confession that this card is made up of left-over test cuts of dies plus a card background I abandoned from another project - so it's not my best, but hey, it didn't end up in the bin!

Those little flag bits are actually cut from the cover sheet in the collection pack that shows what all the paper designs are like - handy for a scaled down snippet of the design. :)

Mix those metalic shades

It's Leo's turn to pick our colour palette for November and look what a beautiful selection she's gone with:

I really wasn't sure I could accurately represent each tone, but well... my well-hoarded stash came up trumps! Love it when that happens!

I finally got to use my almost-2-year-old-and-still-unopened packet of silver Tim Holtz tinsel twine - yay!

And I found my perfect "rose gold" in the form of my favourite coral-y-peachy striped paper by Fancy Pants. Niiiice stuff!

The mornings are definitely getting colder in these parts, so my wintry card for this week seems rather apt considering the foggy start to the day!

52 Cards challenge 2014 - Week 45

Morning, morning everyone!

Well, we're now into November so you can expect to see me concentrating mainly on Christmas cards here on out, but not just yet!

Our theme for this week is...

Botanical

I loved the look of this illustration and well, there are so many botanical aspects to it that you could incorporate into cardmaking. From autumnal leaves, winter greenery and berries, colourful spring flowers and delicate summer blooms. So much to choose from!

For my first card I went with roses and delicate summer shades:

I used this lovely blush pink paper from the Open Book collection by Maggie Holmes for Crate Paper combined with grey tones. Love that combo! The little bow is also cut from the same floral paper. And of course Adirondack Salmon pink dye ink provided the perfect shade of blush for the flowers. :)

This week over on the Daring Cardmakers blog it was my turn to pick our challenge and it's a landmark week for us.

We've turned eight and the lovely Dawn is joining our Design Team full time. Sweet! :D

I just love how these little plastic wiggly eyes can completely transform anything into something cute, awesome, and hilarious!

But I had a lovely surprise today when Elle's Studio shared one of my October Hey Little Magpie cards on their Instagram feed. Sweeeet!

In other news, our current weather trend can be summed up in the following Instagram photos... we have gone from tropical cocktails complete with cactus accessories:

...and fresh coconut for elevenses...

...to 2 degrees in the morning and having to start the day with the holy trinity of hot chocolate + syrup of your choice + a big mug:

Yep.... winter is coming!

Also today was the day for me to try out the next of the colours from these lovely Mavala nail varnish sets I bought in TK Maxx last week. I looooooooove Mavala - their colours are awesome and they come in just the right size of bottle for fashion nails, but best of all they have real staying power - especially compared to Nails Inc which always peels off in one layer for me - without fail!

So in a bit of a dilemma after trying the Candy Pink plus Pink diamond glitter last week I looked to the oracle that is Facebook for what to try next. Facebook replied with Mexico first of all, plus a few recommendations for Black Cherry. I am now sporting Mexico which is a gorgeous shade of purple and promise to give Black Cherry a go for Halloween! Bwah-ha-haaa...

Have to say that glitter paper by American Crafts cuts really well with steel dies, plus the glitter doesn't come off everywhere and it is really twinkly in real life. I will definitely be cutting more bits and pieces from the Christmas pad I picked up the other week. :D Also returning from a stamping hiatus is the elephant stamp from the Jungle Pals set by Sassafras Lass, this stamp set must be at least 3 years old now, but the jungle critters in it are just lovely.

Hoping to get some crafting in one evening this week as I still have a few things to do on my crafty to-do list... we'll see how that goes!

Sentimental Friday!

This week over on the Daring Cardmakers blog, Gez has challenged us to feature our favourite quote or sentiment on our cards.

I always get a cheery smile on my face to the lyrics of "You are my sunshine"... and well I had a special project in mind this week that I wanted to combine with some of the words to this song.

There is a certain crafty BFF who has been angling for a rainbow card for a while, and finally her rainbow wish has been granted. I hope she likes it! :D

I just love this paper pad by Pink Paislee - I have used the papers in this collection so much. And that black paper featuring the chalk effect "You make me HAPPY when skies are grey" - well I love how it fits so neatly into the Lawn Fawn journaling card die. :D

Also great tip that I realised at a late stage - if you have that MFT rainbow die, just cut it from cream cardstock and colour in all the individual bits, don't waste time and energy cutting it 7 times in 7 different shades of cardstock. :oP Promarkers are the solution - they make for a very nice rainbow!

Christmas came to the Hey Little Magpie blog

I just love that Bokeh-like background paper. The snowflakes and penguin are from the same ephemera pack and those Lawn Fawn cloud dies can be used whatever the weather it seems. :o)

Another festive little scene up next - using that old favourite - the Memory Box landscape die!

Couldn't resist combining the MERRY banner elements from Elle's Studio with that black glitter "Christmas" sticker. And that little green tree from Pink Paislee was the perfect item to bring a pop of contrasting colour to the whole scene. :)

I just love the die-cut words in the Merry & Bright ephemera pack, I used the "cheer" one here and mounted it on 3D foam on a piece of contrasting aqua paper to make it really stand out. And there had to be a snowflake somewhere right? I finished that off by cutting out the heart from a tab die-cut in the Good Cheer ephemera pack. And yes the Lawn Fawn journaling card die had to come out to play again. Such a handy die!
